So begins Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra. The two lines above are the first two aphorisms from this great philosophy on yoga. There are 193 more which reveal an old and deep wisdom with suggestions for achieving a quieter mind and more peaceful existence.
Not much is known about Patañjali. He is thought to have existed somewhere between 400 B.C.E. and 900 C.E. He is credited with compiling the Yoga Sutra, a text on grammar, and another on Ayurveda. His name means “that which falls into prayerful hands.”
